What does the terry-cloth weight indicate?

The weight of the terry cloth indicates the weight in grams per square meter of fabric and is one of the main indicators of the quality of a product. In fact, the higher the terry cloth grammage, the higher the quality of the material and the greater absorbency. Generally a good terry cloth starts from a weight of 300 grams and up, but each terry has specific characteristics that make it suitable for different needs. In general, towels can be distinguished with:

  • light weight (350 - 400 gsm), also called "micro-cotton towel" due to their particular lightness and the reduced volume occupied. They usually dry faster than heavier terry fabrics
  • medium weight (400-500 gsm), generally the most common and used for quality bathrobes and bath towel sets, because it has an excellent drying capacity and is always pleasant and soft in contact with the skin
  • high weight (over 500 gsm), able to dry the skin perfectly and extremely soft to the touch. Due to their thickness, terry fabrics of this grammage take longer to dry than fabrics of lower grammage.
